Ave Maria University About Ave Maria University

Ave Maria is a Catholic institute which was dreamt and eventually founded by Thomas S. Monaghan. It was followed by the need for catholic institutes which were better adapted to the needs of today. The last of Catholic institutes turning into universities was in 1963 and so when it began in 1998, it was with a single objective to bring liberal arts education integrated in faith. The land for the university was donated by Barron Collier Family and is based in Ave Maria, Florida.

A private institute, Ave Maria University was established by Rev. Frank J. Dewane, Bishop of the Diocese of Venice, Florida, as the Catholic university to be guided by Code of Canon Law. The institute in all its conduct takes inspiration from St. John Paul II and St. Teresa of Calcutta and is committed to Mary the Mother of God.

Being a Catholic institute, spiritual life sits at the center of everything. The university has its own Campus Ministry which holds mass and confessions, while also providing the adoration chapel. It initiated Mother Teresa Project in 2014 to educate its students on the legacy of Mother Teresa through her life and writings. Besides serious work, the campus holds over 250 events throughout the year for its students to enjoy alongside studying and praying; Feast of Annunciation being the grandest of events. There are interesting traditions such as the dorm wars. Arts are a common practice at the university, with its famous ‘Shakespeare in Performance’. Physical activities are also encouraged, and besides athletic teams ‘Gyrenes’ participating at NAIA Division II, the equestrian at the campus is also gaining prominence.  The campus colors are Blue and Green.

Academic programs at Ave Maria include undergraduate programs with 32 majors and 24 minors, and a Patrick F. Taylor Graduate Programs in Theology, offering Masters and Ph. D. There are also Honors programs, Study Abroad programs as well as summer courses. Its prestigious facility is the Mother Teresa Museum, which is the only other place outside of Calcutta where the sari of Mother Teresa is on public display.
