About Adams State University
A State sponsored and a Public Liberal Arts university, ASU initially began as a teacher’s college founded by Billy Adams. Being a Colorado Legislator, Adams worked hard to get authorization and after three decade long struggle finally set up Adams State Normal School in 1921. The school began with a mission to create opportunities and better qualified teachers from even the most distant corners of Colorado. Under exceptional leadership over the years, the school turned into a college and eventually grew into a thriving and progressive university that it is today. With its ideas of inclusion as well as diversity acceptance, Adams State University has been delegated as a Hispanic Serving Institute (HIS).
Situated in the San Luis Valley, Alamosa, Colorado, the university has from its start excelled in its quality of education. The first person to graduate in 1926, Harriet Dalzell Hester went on to become the school’s first librarian and later, an Alamosa County school superintendent.
Presently, ASU offers Undergraduate programs in 28 different fields and Graduate Programs in more than 10 fields. There is also a Ph.D. program offered in Counselor Education. Besides these, there are also Distance Learning educational programs, both undergraduate and graduate programs along with K-12 Educator Professional Development Program. The university’s prominent facilities and buildings named in the honor of those who contributed to the university such as Richardson Hall, after the first President; Porter Hall after William A. Porter, founder of E-Trade; McDaniel Hall after Dr. John McDaniel, part of the faculty and a benefactor to the university.
The university also has great athletic facilities for its students. There is Rex Activity Center and Plachy Hall which include a gym, pools, basketball court and other facilities. With the official colors being green and while and the mascot Grizzly Bear, ASU teams participate in NCA Division II and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
